World Mosquito Day – August 20, 2026
Protecting Our Community Through Prevention
On August 20, 2026, we recognize World Mosquito Day, an opportunity to increase awareness of mosquito-borne illnesses and the importance of prevention. The observance supports continued education and innovative public-health approaches to reducing diseases transmitted by mosquitoes.
For Tribal Communities, prevention can be approached in a way that respects Tribal sovereignty, local knowledge, culture, and each Tribe’s authority to protect the health and well-being of its people. Community-driven public health strengthens our ability to identify local risks, provide culturally responsive education, and make prevention decisions that reflect the needs of our Community.
· Simple steps can make a difference:
· Remove or regularly empty standing water around homes and Community spaces.
· Use an EPA-registered insect repellent as directed.
· Wear long sleeves and pants when mosquito exposure is likely.
· Maintain window and door screens.
· Stay informed about local mosquito activity and public-health advisories.
Prevention is protection. By combining education, environmental awareness, and Community participation, we can help protect our children, Elders, families, and future generations.
